Just a couple of weeks ago we were encouraging you to take advantage of the scopes to see the Golden Eagles nesting set up at the Northern Point by volunteer and birder Steve Lay (AKA “The Snake Charmer of Smith Rock”). Hopefully you got a chance to take a peek at the activity then, as the eaglet has died sometime since then.
When rumors circulated that the parents of the Bald and Golden Eagles had abandoned their nests with the big snow the park got in February, we reached out to Park Management. While former Smith Rock State Park Naturalist David Vick retired last year, that hasn’t stopped him from caring how nesting season is going.
It's that time of the year again when we watch the watchers. The eagle nest watchers that is. We now have an update on both the bald and golden eagles. Smith Rock is unique in that both species share a relatively small area each year to breed.
Thanks everyone for keeping the noise level down on the Canyon Trail and Bivy Rim and for staying off routes in the Monument Area. And while we'll miss watching all the nest action, Solo the park's Bald eaglet and the two Golden eaglets have successfully fledged.
It's nesting time again at Smith Rock State Park for both pairs of golden and bald eagles. Hiking trails remain open but some campsites and climbing route closures start February 17.
