The last of the raptor closures, this time for both Prairie and Peregrine falcons, has been lifted as of July 15, 2017 at Smith Rock State Park. Yes, climbers—First Kiss is back open, along with all routes above 100 feet in the Smith Rock Group area.
The last of the raptor closures, this time for peregrine falcons, has been lifted as of July 31, 2016 at Smith Rock State Park. This translates to all of Picnic Lunch Wall climbing routes now open, even those above the first pitch.
And with that announcement comes the joint announcement of nesting area closures in the Picnic Lunch Wall and First Kiss areas that are in effect until June 30, 2016. Smith Rock State Park is very lucky to have these birds choose the park as their safe breeding turf. It's rare that they travel away from wetlands, so be sure to bring your binoculars.
