Smith Rock Bivy Campground Opens for the Season
March 15, 2022
Our mild winter got everyone itching to come camping at Smith Rock. After a soft opening this weekend to work out any kinks, March 15 marks the first official day to scratch that itch. The newly installed road gate was wide open today, park hosts were at the ready, and a few tents could be seen in prime spots.
For those new to Smith Rock, the Bivouac, or “Bivy” is a “walk-in” camp. While that doesn’t mean you can’t bring your car, you just can’t park it next to your spot, and you can’t sleep in it. It’s also not reservable, so plan on getting there early on Fridays if you want to stay the weekend, as the busy season starts now. The only way to find out if it’s full is when the “NO VACANCY’ sign goes up when the parking spaces are filled.

One of the other nice things “Summit Trail Amy” does—adding to the Little Free Library at the BIvy.
The “VACANCY” sign changes to “NO VACANCY” when the parking lot is full.
