Have something to add to the rules-making on Drones Zones at Smith Rock State Park? You have until 5:00 PM, April 7, 2022. What does that mean? Well, it’s complicated if you think that’s a referendum on drones or no drones. That’s because Oregon has little authority over federally-managed airspace.

Smith Rock State Park is the birthplace of sport climbing in the U.S when bolting routes took off in the early and mid-1980s on what were previously blank faces. Since then, each decade has seen the proliferation of more routes as new climbers came on the scene and added to the wonderful variety we have seen of grades for a range of climbing skillsets. Fast forward to 2020.
To the delight of many misery seekers, Smith Rock’s Misery Ridge Trail barriers came down today. A lot of love goes into the park from both staff and volunteers on a regular basis to provide a great experience for visitors. The Smith Rock Group even had a small group of board members spend the entire day yesterday working on clearing scree from trails to help keep everyone safe. Now is the opportunity for visitors to give back by respecting the guidelines in place for the partial reopening of Smith Rock after COVID-19 restrictions get lifted tomorrow morning.
